When you’re planning to ship a parcel with LTL shipping, you must remember that you will be sharing the truck space with other shippers who are also sending shipments through LTL.

In recent years, the freight cost has shifted from being based on the weight of your package to how much room your goods occupy in the truck. And that is why LTL shipping turns out to be an affordable and preferable choice for regular shippers.

If you want to find out how the freight density of your shipment will affect the overall delivery rate, keep reading this article. Furthermore, discover how to calculate the freight density to determine the freight class of your parcel.

What is Freight Density?

Freight density is one of the most common characteristics determining your package's freight class. This, in turn, will help you find out your shipping cost. Now, this may leave you wondering about the significance of the freight class.

To put it simply, the freight class is a standard way of categorizing your shipping commodities and products into different classes. LTL carriers use these freight classes to carry and ship your goods.

These classes go from 50 to 500, and the lower the class, the less the shipment will cost to ship. Moreover, four important factors tend to make the freight class. These critical factors include freight density, stow-ability, liability, and handling.

The freight density measures how much room your package will take up compared to its weight. It is a combination of your box’s weight and its dimensions. As one of these factors increases, the freight density also rises. So, calculating the freight density before sending a shipment is a great way to plan your shipment.

How to Determine Freight Density

The freight density of your shipment can easily be calculated using a freight density calculator. However, you may also do it by following the steps given below.

Step 1:

Start by taking the measurements of your shipment. Note its height, width, and length in inches. If you’re sending more than one box, take separate measurements of all of them. Also, don’t forget to round off to the nearest whole number for your ease.

Step 2:

Your next step is multiplying the measured values (length x width x height). The value you get will be in cubic inches. If you’re sending multiple boxes, multiply the measured values for each box. After that, add them all together to obtain the total cubic inches.

Step 3:

This step is about changing the units of your value. You have to divide the value you obtained in the previous step by 1,728, which is the total number of cubic inches per foot.

Step 4:

Now, find out the weight of your shipment in pounds. Change it to pounds if it is in kilograms by multiplying your obtained value by 2.2. Next, divide the weight of your parcel by the total cubic feet. This value will be of freight density, which has the units of pounds per cubic foot.

Conclusion

After determining the freight density, you can quickly find the freight class of your shipment by using the density list. Then, the freight class can be used to discover the shipping cost with the freight shipping cost calculator. Make sure to estimate your freight density in advance to make better shipping decisions.
